Sticking with the Human Body theme that we have been working on pretty much since we started school in September we have been learning about our 5 senses. We have done a little work on skin and our sense of touch (we also looked at the lines, tendens, joints and finger prints in/on our hands). We experimented with different objects using primarily touch but also smell and taste if we could not determine what the object was. Then we did smell, it was intresting to me in all of the experiments to see which child could more easily identify which object/smell. J has a well developed sense of smell compared to M, being 4 years older she also has more experience to use as a reference and was able to recall what she has seen that smelled 'like' the object whereas he had less to call on. W was pretty close to J and was the only one to identify raw bacon, since he is the only one of the 3 who eats bacon on its own I thought that was interesting to see too.
The children loved these activities and each learned something about their body and their world around them. I am hoping to plan an outdoor activity to see what senses we use when we are outside. It is always good to take away their sense of sight by using a blind fold to begin the activity since this sense will override the others alot of the time.
