We rounded the corner of the Nature Lodge and off to a great start saw our first bird, a Pheobe, yeah...well, that was it - it was too hot and over the next hour we saw zero birds, heard a couple but spotted none.

The woods are beautiful though, so it was a nice walk.

We did find some interesting things to do along the way - like dare devil climbing out over the vernal pool!

Ponding:
First the children were with Taro learning about adaptations and thinking about the sorts of adaptations that help animals to survive in their world.

Then Mel took us to the pond. This class was one of the best we have had at Cranberry Lake, we caught so many frogs it was amazing. I actually touched a number of them with my bare hands and did not freak out or anything...true!
Along the way to our ponding spot Mel showed us the sleeping spot of a group of Black Snakes, I took this photo - it was hard to tell if I caught the snake or not. We decided it best to stay on the trails for sure - we would never have known these fellows were there if she had not pointed them out.

The first captured Bull Frog - there were a number by the end of the session.

The things we were hoping to find in the pond water.

A proud little man...why?

..because he caught this frog all by himself.

J had the job of keeping the frogs in their temporary homes, the bull frogs were particularly tricky.

All of the chn and the Naturalist Mel, talking about some of the things we found in the pond.

Yet another Bull Frog.

All good things must come to an end, M releasing his new friends, smart, smarter and smartest!

We had another cool class where we hiked about a mile into the park to a place where a hermit lived early in the 20th Century. And then our final class for Spring was a pot luck lunch and nature games, the chn had a blast, us mums had a fun chat. Both times I forgot my camera.
