Visit to Stewart Airforce Base

Back in May on a cold windy day (though the rain stayed away for a few hours) we toured a vouple of aircraft at Stewar Airfoce base about an hour north of here. It is a Guard and Marine base with fairdinkum huge aircraft and since Military aircraft are one of the Boys most favourite topics we jsut had to go along. It is one of the benefits of home schooling that we have oppotunities like these, so over a hundred other people thought it was a good idea too.

First we toured a C130 Hercules (which I have had the pleasure - or rather discomfort - of flying in) and then a C5 Galaxy which is the biggest transport plane outside of the Soviet Union (their star lifter is bigger but that is incomprehensible once you have seen a C5 up close).

Children waiting for a chance to get inside the Hercules, and atempting to touch the proppellor - they are so big, it is pretty awesome to be alongside.

Next we toured a Galaxy C5. Pretty impressive, I am not sure how it manages to get off the ground, specially with 2 Abrahams tanks inside. Really it is like being in a long large tunel, you can drive a bus through if you so desired.

J and her friend from co-op. We did not expect to see any one we knew so it was a nice suprise to see J and her mum and big brother.

On the rear ramp of the Galaxy.
